When you ask personal finance bloggers about blogs, they almost always point to other personal finance blogs, or maybe even a coupon/frugality blog.
However, there are so many different topics you can write about – pretty much anything you are passionate about can become a blog. Don’t let this list stop you, but here are some main blogging verticals:
Personal Finance - These blogs discuss everything personal finance related: from saving and investing, to spending wisely, to getting out of debt. I would argue that this is one of the biggest blogging verticals, but the others are pretty big as well.
Mom - Mom blogs discuss everything related to the family – from getting pregnant to having a baby, to raising kids, and more.
Travel - Travel blogs are just like they sound, discussing everything travel related. Some of these bloggers live off their blog income and travel, which is pretty neat.
Fitness - Fitness blogs have really started taking off over the last year or so. Maybe it’s because too many bloggers sat at their computers and were overweight. Anyway, these blogs share their author’s stories about getting fit.
Tech - Tech blogs were probably the first mainstream blogs, highlighting all the news in the tech world. These are also some of the biggest blogs out there right now.
Lifestyle - Lifestyle blogs write about whatever their author’s lifestyle is. It could be about animals, cooking, whatever. This is pretty much open to whatever you can relate your lifestyle to.
The bottom line is that there as many topics to write about as there are people who want to write about them. If you are on the fence about starting an online business, do what you’re passionate about and start a blog around it. If you network with other bloggers and help them out, they will return the favor and you will see a readership start to build.
Readers, what other big blogging verticals can you think of? What are your thoughts on blog niches?

Fishing blogs seem to be quite numerous, and filled with product advertising.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a fishing blog – but I would consider it lifestyle.
Pet blogs.
Green living blogs.
Minimalism blogs.
Couldn’t you bucket all those under lifestyle?
I try to incorporate all of the things I am passionate about on my blog. It seems to work well. I get all sorts of readers and commenters.
How widely do you define lifestyle?
I cut my teeth on sports blogs, to tell the truth. Lots of people where I’m from (Boston area, originally) watched Bill Simmons rise form a lowly Boston sports scene blogger to the powerhouse he is today.
Perhaps he’s my muse? Is that weird?
There are a lot of sports blogs – that could be separate than lifestyle.
Survivalist blogs seem to be a growing vertical too. And technology blogs are a mainstay.
What are survivalist blogs? I’ve never heard of that.
In what category do you put the career-change blogs? Is that personal finance, life-style or something separate?
Hmmm…good question – I’m not quite sure!
