If you’re not passionate about something, you won’t succeed. Plain and simple. If you want to create multiple income streams, and be successful at it, you need to enjoy every minute of what you are doing.
Some things you can’t always change – maybe you are stuck at your primary job because you need the income. Well, then don’t go get a side job that you hate just to make more money – it won’t make you happy, and you won’t make a lot of money.
My Focus on Money vs. Passion
Two years ago, I started a niche site in a niche that I didn’t have a clue about, didn’t really enjoy, and did it solely because there was search traffic that could make me money. So, I made a site, researched the topic, and wrote some articles. I put some advertisements up and let it sit.
It didn’t do anything for me. I was maybe on Page 8 of Google on a good day…I needed to start backlinking…
Well, I already didn’t enjoy this topic, and I was doing a lot of things I did enjoy. So what happened, I never really got around to backlinking… I never had the passion to. It just didn’t do anything for me to make it worth spending more time on.
Just last week, the site came up for renewal, and I DIDN’T renew it. It actually felt pretty good to NOT do something.
I’m not one to admit failure often, but this is a case that I did something for the wrong reasons, and it just didn’t work out for me. Now, no more spending time, effort, money, etc. on something that I don’t enjoy – and hopefully it will result in me spending more time on projects I do enjoy!
Readers, have you ever done something for the money? Did you regret it later?

Well, I think there’s a difference between “only do what you’re passionate about” and “don’t do something just for the money”. Hm, maybe I’ll have to write about that. But I agree that starting a project just because you think you can make money at it is a bad idea. Being passionate is much better, and you’re more likely to succeed, too.

I can see a difference. I think you will be more successful if you are passionate than just “not doing something for the money”.
We can get philosophical – what if you only care about the money? Then you don’t care what niche your site is in, haha.
Seriously, you’re right. The same things happens at Day Jobs – if you work in a field you don’t really care for, your performance will suffer. Since work on the web is self-directed, it doesn’t make sense to force yourself to work on niches you don’t have an interest in working.

I don’t know if you need to be passionate about something to do it but you at least need to have an interest in it or enjoy doing it. I am passionate about most of what I do but that passion does have its ups and downs. That is one good thing about having multiple sites. I can concentrate my efforts on different sites depending on my current passion.
I don’t recall ever doing something for money! Have I done things without passion? Absolutely! I will never do it again and haven’t for 27+ years.

I think there’s much wisdom in pursuing what you’re interested in, while also balancing it with realism and immediate needs. If you can do it, that’s great. If you can’t wait to get to work and it doesn’t feel like work, it stands to reason that you’ll have a better chance to succeed. With success, comes money anyway in many cases.

Yes, there does need to be a dose of realism. You can’t go be an artist if you can’t afford to eat.
Spot on! I totally agree wit hyou that with passion comes success and you will be able to push your self and grow your site larger!

When there are so many things to do that you are interested in, why spend energy on things you dislike? It must have been freeing to not renew. Did you think about selling the site, or did you not feel it was worth it?
